NATIONAL GUARD: The Illinois Army National Guard 1844th Transportation Company in Quincy will be mobilized to federal active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Approximately 180 Soldiers of the transportation company have been called-up for up to 12 months of active duty, beginning early next year. KNOX MURDER: Residents of this small town on Mo. 6 are breathing easier today after a brother and sister from Northeast Missouri were arrested Tuesday and charged with the October 2006 shooting death of a Knox City man. Knox County Sheriff Mike Kite said Shane Colby Roberts, 28, and Angela D. Knowles, 27, have been arrested on murder charges and are lodged in the Adair County Jail in Kirksville. SCHOOL REPORT CARDS: The Quincy School District spends less money and does better academically when compared with state averages, according to the annual School Report Card compiled by the Illinois State Board of Education.
North Florida associations of all sizes cooperate in a myriad of ministries
Baptist associations in the United States celebrate their 300th anniversary in 2007. The Florida Baptist Witness is honoring Florida's 49 associations in a series of articles that will showcase each association and its ministries. This is the fourth installment. BEULAH BAPTIST ASSOCIATION Beulah Baptist Association's Director of Missions James Roberts, on the job for only five months, told Florida Baptist Witness he wants to "build on the groundwork [former DOM Hugh Dampier] laid for us." Roberts was pastor of Pine Grove Baptist Church in Lake City during Dampier's 11-year tenure as DOM. When Dampier retired, Roberts took the reins of Beulah association. Dampier changed the emphasis in associational missions, moving from "training meetings" to "hands-on" opportunities to minister to communities, and Roberts plans to continue that pattern.

SINGAPORE (Thomson Financial) - Stock markets across Asia were mixed Monday on continued worry about the credit crisis with Australia finding support in fresh gains among resource stocks while Shanghai faltered on expectations of further tightening measures to cool the Chinese economy. Benchmarks in South Korea and Taiwan were flat, while Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines managed modest gains. The Hang Seng was slightly higher after falling in early trade. Valuations have become more attractive after the declines of the past week, but concerns about the global credit crunch are preventing investors from making aggressive moves. "It's a 3 trillion dollar problem worldwide and it should play a major role on the markets for some time to come," said Jose Vistan Jr, research director at AB Capital Securities in Manila.

This monologue — delivered by a smug, poorly drawn caricature of the corrupt Washington bureaucrat — seemed out of place in its original delivery in Stephan Gaghan's 2006 film Syriana. But, as anyone who has done time in emerging markets knows, corruption indeed keeps many, many people “safe and warm." Judging by the 2007 Global Corruption Perceptions Index, released each year by corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI), people here just keep on getting safer and warmer.
