IT COULD happen to you. Somebody swipes your Social Security number, then uses it to open a credit card in your name. Before you know it, you've become a victim of identity theft and have a pile of bills for things you didn't buy. Orinda resident Sylvia Coates has found a way to prevent that unpleasant scenario from happening by freezing her credit reports. "I can't tell you how wonderful it is. I think it is the only foolproof way," she said. Coates applied for a credit freeze soon after that option become available in California in 2003, thanks to passage of a state law that requires credit reporting bureaus to let consumers initiate a credit freeze. Having a credit freeze means that access to your credit reports and credit scores cannot be shared with potential creditors or lenders unless you give permission.

Mother Shot While Young Daughter Slept
The woman shot in the doorway of her Seminole County home on Friday night has died. Deputies showed up to the home on Stefanik Rd. near Howell Branch Rd. after neighbors called 911 and said they heard gunshots. They found Keira Banks laying near her front door with a gunshot wound, and her young daughter sleeping in the next room. Banks was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she died as a result of her injuries shortly after noon on Sunday. The child was unharmed and is now staying with her father and grandmother. While neighbors were able to give detectives some information, deputies said they still have no motive or suspects Sunday evening. Witnesses reported seeing three or four black men leave the area in a blue or green Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis with missing hubcaps.
BPM, Credit Mutuel to take at least month on alliance studies - report
MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Banca Popolare di Milano and France's Credit Mutuel have set up working groups that will take at least a month to examine a possible alliance, said Radiocor news agency in an unsourced report. Earlier this month, BPM decided to give priority to deeper studies on a tie with Credit Mutuel, over other link-up options, and earlier this week said it will complete this task as soon as possible. Today, Radiocor said the work programme between BPM and the French institution was decided yesterday by their chiefs at a meeting in Paris.
